All Leveler for August Lindsay D!

1.) What got you started in CrossFit? How did you hear about it?
After having kids, I struggled to find fitness activities that satisfied my need for intensity that came from a lifetime of competitive sport. I found fitness was a chore and something I needed to force into my day to avoid getting out of shape. I went to a “Bring A Friend Day” and immediately knew this is what I needed in my life. The inclusive culture filled with like minded, hard working people drew me in immediately. I loved the concept of framing fitness from the perspective of “What my body can do” vs “What my body looks like”. Honestly, that shift is life changing.

2.) What is your favourite part about coming to the gym?
My favourite part about coming to the gym is feeling like I am part of a team. I love the people, the positive and encouraging atmosphere, and I LOVE that feeling of leaving everything on the floor after a workout. Every workout involves strategy, coaching, and grit. To me, it fills a gap that was left after retiring from volleyball.

3.) What is your favourite CrossFit movement? Least favourite?
I love the assault bike, double-unders and long met-cons. I struggle with all types of push-ups and I am hesitant with heavy weights.

4.) What are your goals in CrossFit?
My goal is live an active and healthy life for as long as possible. My family life is very active – constantly hiking, biking, roller blading, coaching my kids’ various sports teams, and my goal is to have the strength and endurance to keep up this pace for as long as humanly possible.

5.) How do you explain your newfound obsession with CrossFit?.
I love the endorphins. I need them. It’s simple brain chemistry - an intense WOD good for physical and mental health, and there’s no healthier addiction.

  1. What advice do you have for someone who is thinking of trying CrossFit?
Once you enter the gym, I don’t think you will ever look back. The coaches and members at All- Level are so friendly and inclusive that I really think you’ll feel comfortable right away. If you are a parent struggling to decide whether you can commit the time or money – I always think about all we spend on our kids’ sports and activities. You deserve that too!
  2. What does CrossFit mean to you?
It’s a lifestyle. It’s not the just the hour in the gym - but it’s being a part of a supportive community, eating whole foods, staying active through various types of activities, trying new things, encouraging others. I don’t know, I kind of see if as a mindset and way of being.
  3. How has CrossFit helped you improve your life outside of the gym?
It’s that concept of putting on your own life vest before assisting others. The rest of my time is dedicated to my family and to teaching and I need to be in a good headspace to be effective in those roles. CrossFit is my outlet that prepares me and energizes me for everything else.
